***Sweetie will be available for adoption at Rosedale Mills (Pennington, NJ) over the March 6-8 weekend. Before considering applying for her adoption, please fully read her profile***

Sweetie's profile is being written in a different and more "first-person" manner because I know her as one of my own dogs for the past 1 1/2 years. What better way to describe such a wonderful little girl than with a first hand account.

Sweetie came to SoCo at the end of Aug, 2018 and immediately became one of my personal foster dogs. She was skinny, scared and, what fur she had, was matted. Her skin irritated her so much that she would scratched herself into a bloody mess and I noticed blood in her urine. During her first vet visit, we discovered that Sweetie had three rather large kidney stones and had to immediately undergo surgery to remove them. Her skin scrape came back negative for any form of mange, mites or other cause of her skin condition and we also discovered that Sweetie was heartworm positive on top of her other ailments. It's apparent that Sweetie's former owner didn't provide her with proper care.

Because of Sweetie's urinary tract problems, she has to remain on a specialized type of food, such as the Royal Canine Urinary SO that I feed her. She's had no further urinary problems since the surgery and food switch.

After many attempts of different medications and such to correct her itchy skin failed, I decided to try adding fish oil to her diet . The specialized urinary foods only come with a chicken base and, apparently, it's most likely that Sweetie has an allergic reaction to chicken. I'll be happy to discuss the addition of fish oil to Sweetie's diet with any potential adopters as this is an inexpensive solution to her skin problem and has helped her tremendously. And to add to the good news on all of her ailments and after undergoing the Slow Kill method of treating her heartworms, Sweetie recently tested negative for heartworms!

Sweetie has lived with me and as one of my own dogs for the last 1 1/2 years. I've grown very fond of her but my intent has always been to find her a home so she could receive much more love, care and one-on-one attention that I could ever give her. Her name describes her personality very well. She's coexisted with my dogs rather nicely with only the occasional rift with any of them so I know she'll do well in a home with another calm, friendly dog. She's also coexisted with my cat very well too, only acting out a little if my cat gets near her food. She's a bit nervous when being picked up as if she's been dropped a time or two but I can demonstrate the proper way to lift her to ease her fears. Sweetie will not jump up at all, not onto a couch, bed or even a person and would have to be lifted to enjoy sitting on the couch or sleeping in a human's bed. She does enjoy laying on a dog bed and seems fine if limited to such. She apparently has had some house training in her past but a refresher course may be needed once in a new home. Sweetie's ideal for an elderly/retired person or family without young children who is looking for a great companion.

Sweetie has been fully vetted and de-wormed on a regular basis. She's also been kept on her monthly preventatives with Bravecto being the recommended flea/tick preventative for her. She will require regular groomings with care being given to the still somewhat thin hair spots on her back. Despite her earlier ailments and the requirement for ongoing care, Sweetie is a healthy, happy and wonderful girl.

Applications for this very special girl can be submitted at socorescue.com
